ART Exhibition Statement

For many years it was believed that women in the Yorùbá kingdom were banned from playing the Dùndún talking drums; a taboo!

This is untrue.

The truth is that the women were occupied with activities that diverted their attention away from playing the drums such as falling ill from the pain of their menstruation cycle, getting married, getting pregnant, childbirth, rearing children, house chores, caring for their husbands, societal responsibilities and running a business.

There was even a woman whose name was Àyàn Àgalú. She designed, built and taught the men how to play the Dùndún talking drums with the wisdom of Ifá.
